Asamoah Gyan, a former Black Stars captain, became a hot topic on X (previously known as Twitter) following Ghana’s 1-1 tie with Niger in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier on September 9, 2024.

Following their draw with Niger in Morocco, the Black Stars have yet to win their qualifying series match.

Ghana gained the lead in the first half on a thunderous shot by Alidu Seidu, who finished the half ahead.

However, after missing two important chances, Niger equalized in stoppage time when Oumar Sako scored off a rebound, capitalizing on Ghana’s weak defending.

Ghana is now third in Group F and must overcome Sudan in their next encounter on October 7, 2024, to strengthen their prospects of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON.

Some X users noted that following Gyan’s retirement from the national team, the Black Stars have suffered in different competitions and qualifying matches, and they also faulted the players for not playing with enthusiasm for the country.

Others said that if the former Sunderland star had joined the current Black Stars team, scoring goals would be easier.

Gyan is the Ghana national team’s all-time best scorer, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With six goals, he is the leading African goal scorer in World Cup history.

Asamoah Gyan also competed for Ghana in the 2004 Summer Olympics and seven Africa Cup of Nations games (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017), helping the nation finish third in 2008 and runners-up in 2010 and 2015.
